Top 4 Gourmet Picks Near Fukuoka’s COSMIC CRUISE

Have you ever stepped out of the Fukuoka City Science Museum’s dome theater and thought, “Where should I eat?” Starting in September 2026, the planetarium show “COSMIC CRUISE” will offer an immersive experience that projects a journey through the vast universe onto the dome. After watching it, you’ll likely want to savor a meal, feeling as if you’ve just returned to Earth.

Roppongi is a residential area about 15 minutes from Hakata Station via the Nanakuma Line. With ongoing redevelopment, there are now more cafes and restaurants alongside the science museum and a legal information center, as well as improvements to the former university site. From the ticket gate at Roppongi Station, it’s just a one-minute walk to the science museum, and the four places I’m about to introduce are all within a seven-minute walk from the station.

In this 500-meter radius, you’ll find the top-rated burger, steak, soba, and gyoza spots—four categories of renowned restaurants all gathered together. I’ve carefully selected these four places for different times of the day, from lunch before your visit to dinner on your way back.

First Stop: HAMBURGER SHOP Tomiyoshi (3-minute walk from Ropponmatsu Station)

After about a three-minute walk along the Jonan Line from the Ropponmatsu intersection toward Sakurazaka, you’ll spot an orange sign on the second floor of a building called “Sorisso Ropponmatsu.” This small gourmet burger joint, run by a couple, was selected as one of Tabelog’s top 100 burger spots just a year and eight months after opening in June 2024.

The owner honed his skills at the famous burger shop “BROZERS’,” which once led Japan’s hamburger culture. He offers 22 types of burgers made with 100% beef patties and homemade buns. The space has 13 seats, and enjoying a burger while overlooking the streets of Ropponmatsu makes for a perfect lunch after visiting the science museum.

What Makes This Place Special

One of the signature items, the “Elvis Burger,” is stacked high with bacon, cheddar cheese, and onion rings—so much so that you might need to unhinge your jaw to take a bite. Each chew releases the rich flavor of the patty, leaving you with a satisfying feeling of having truly eaten well.

The drinks, especially the rich shakes made from a soft-serve machine, are popular, and you can even choose alcoholic options. The interior has an American diner vibe with orange accents, making it a welcoming spot for families with kids. They accept card payments and also support WeChat Pay, so international travelers can feel at ease.

Shop Information

  • Address: 1-14-24 Tani, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Sorisso Ropponmatsu 2F
  • Access: About a 3-minute walk (287m) from Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line
  • Hours: 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Last order at 8:30 PM)
  • Closed: Wednesdays (open on holidays)
  • Tip: It’s a small place with 13 seats, so it can fill up quickly on weekends. You can make a reservation online through Tabelog.

Shiro’s Tip

Takeout is available. Since you often need to organize your belongings before entering the dome theater at the science museum, grabbing a burger to enjoy on the bench next to the entrance is a good idea. Just make sure to finish your shake before it melts!

Second Stop: Seiki Hitoshina (5-minute walk from Ropponmatsu Station)

As I stepped into the alley of Ropponmatsu 4-chome, I found a small building called “Pier 21.” On the first floor, a shop exuding a refined Japanese atmosphere stood quietly. “Seiki Hitoshina” — the name “Hitoshina” literally means that there’s only one item on the menu. What they serve is “lean beef filet steak with clay pot rice set,” and that’s it.

The lack of options is surprisingly refreshing. Once seated, the only question I faced was, “How much would you like?” After that, it’s just a matter of waiting. The shop has a total of 15 seats — four at the counter and eleven at tables — and it’s open only during lunch hours. For those planning to visit the science museum in the morning, this place fits perfectly around lunchtime.

The Shop’s Appeal

The beef used here is the filet from “New Zealand grass-fed cattle.” The red meat from cows raised solely on grass is low in fat, and when you pour some broth over it, the umami really shines through. The “broth steak,” cooked slowly on a lava plate and enjoyed with broth, is a reinterpretation of steak within the context of Japanese cuisine.

The rice is sourced from a farm that has been organic for 40 years, milled fresh every morning and cooked in a clay pot. They offer unlimited refills, so even just the rice is quite satisfying. I feel that their selection as one of the top 100 steak places in the WEST is a testament to their commitment to quality ingredients. Tabelog rating: 3.68, with 307 reviews.

  • Access: About a 5-minute walk (375m) from Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line
  • Business Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM / Sat, Sun, Holidays 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Closed: Tuesdays

Shiro’s Tip

Since there’s only one item on the menu, you can walk in without hesitation, even if you’re alone. You can choose the amount of meat when you order, so you can adjust it based on your budget and appetite. They’re closed on Tuesdays, so be careful if you plan to visit the science museum then. Also, the 11 AM slot on weekends tends to get busy, so entering right after they open is smoother.

3rd Stop: Soba Kiri Kanbee (5-minute walk from Ropponmatsu Station)

Exiting Ropponmatsu Station’s exit 1, I walked about five minutes toward the direction of Aburayama. Soon, I found myself in a quiet residential area of Baikoen 1-chome. After turning the corner by a bicycle shop and walking a bit further, a small shop with no apparent sign revealed itself—just eight counter seats tucked away in a narrow alley. This is Soba Kiri Kanbee—a hidden gem chosen as one of Tabelog’s top 100 soba spots (Soba WEST).

The Sarashina soba, made from buckwheat flour ground by the owner in a stone mill, is prepared right in front of you at the counter. Here, it feels less like “eating soba” and more like “experiencing a course composed of soba.” Over about two hours, you’ll enjoy sobakaki, fried sobakaki, seasonal vegetable soba dishes, and pairings with sake. It’s a place I want to remember for those nights when I want to unwind after returning from the science museum.

The Shop’s Appeal

For lunch, they offer a “Soba Zammai Zen” (2,970 yen and up) consisting of seven dishes. Soba tofu, tamagoyaki, tempura, and grilled sobakaki—all served in small plates—show just how versatile soba can be. Reservations are available for lunch, so you can easily fit it into your schedule before or after visiting the science museum.

The dinner course starts at 7,700 yen (soba kaiseki) and 8,800 yen (omakase), with only six seats available. There’s a rule to order at least one drink, and the flow of the meal, paired with seasonal sake, creates a night that feels unique to a soba shop—not quite an izakaya, nor a ryotei. Tabelog rating: 3.71, with 179 reviews.

  • Access: About a 5-minute walk (321m) from Exit 1 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line
  • Hours: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM / 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM (Last entry at 7:30 PM)
  • Closed: Sundays and Mondays on odd weeks
  • Tip for Visiting: For dinner, be sure to arrive by the last entry time of 7:30 PM. Since the courses start simultaneously, arriving late may result in not being able to enter.

Shiro’s Tip

You can make online reservations for the lunch “Soba Zammai Zen” through Tabelog, but for same-day reservations after 11 AM, you’ll need to call. It’s a good idea to confirm before your visit. Note that those under 20 are not allowed for dinner (except for private bookings), and entry with perfume is also prohibited. This is to preserve the natural aroma of the soba.

4th Stop: Gyoza Osomatsu Ropponmatsu (6-minute walk from Ropponmatsu Station)

As I walked from the science museum, the night breeze brushing against my face, I spotted a small light and a handwritten sign tucked away in an alley on Ropponmatsu 4-chome. “Gyoza Osomatsu Ropponmatsu” — a cozy tavern that opened in 2021 and has already made it to Tabelog’s list of top 100 gyoza spots. It’s perfect for a late-night bite after catching a show at COSMIC CRUISE, open only for dinner (5 PM to midnight).

True to its name, gyoza is the star of the menu, but this place is more than just a “pub with gyoza.” It’s a small eatery where everything is made from scratch. In addition to pan-fried and boiled gyoza, you’ll find hanging roasted pork, grass-fed beef menchi-katsu, and a secret curry — all crafted by the chef from the ground up. The seating is limited to six tables for twelve and a standing counter for four, creating an intimate atmosphere that encourages conversation, even among first-time visitors.

What Makes This Place Special

The “Osomatsu Fried Gyoza” is known for its crispy skin that gives way to juicy filling — a balance that has garnered quite a reputation. The “Boiled Gyoza” comes with homemade chive soy sauce, offering a completely different texture and flavor experience. If you order both, you’ll really get a sense of the depth of the chef’s preparations.

They also offer a 90-minute all-you-can-drink course (starting at 4,280 yen), and you can make a reservation online through Tabelog before your visit. Sometimes you can even snag a reservation on the day itself, making it a popular choice among locals. Tabelog rating: 3.66, with 225 reviews.

  • Hours: 5 PM to midnight (Last orders: food 11:30 PM / drinks 11:45 PM)
  • Closed: Tuesdays (irregular holidays may apply)

Shiro’s Tip

Operated by the same company as Seiki Hitoshina (ricebird.jp), the course includes “Seiki Curry.” You can plan a day of dining in Ropponmatsu — lunch at Seiki Hitoshina and dinner at Osomatsu for gyoza and a drink. The addresses are close, just a minute’s walk apart.

Access and Route Guide: How to Get Around from Hakata Station to Roppongi

Access from Hakata Station to Roppongi Station

Getting to Roppongi from Hakata Station is as simple as hopping on the Nanakuma Line subway. It takes about 15 minutes without transfers, and it costs 260 yen (IC payment accepted). The best part about the Nanakuma Line is that you don’t have to change trains at Tenjin Minami Station, so you won’t get lost.

If you use the Fukuoka City Subway one-day pass (640 yen), you can cover Tenjin, Nakasu-Kawabata, Hakata, and Roppongi all in one go. If you’re coming from abroad and plan to explore Fukuoka, it’s a good idea to pre-purchase the “Fukuoka City Subway One-Day Pass” or “JR Kyushu Rail Pass” on Klook to save time at the ticket counter.

Reserve Your Transportation Pass in Advance

You can purchase the one-day subway pass or JR Kyushu Rail Pass on Klook. With a QR code on your smartphone, you can breeze through the ticket gate, making it convenient to use right from your arrival day.

Recommended Hotels Around Roppongi and Tenjin

There aren’t many large hotels around Roppongi since it’s a residential area, but securing a hotel in the Tenjin Minami Station area (two stations from Roppongi) or near Hakata Station will make your travel smoother. You can easily cover both the morning opening of the science museum and the evening gourmet scene in Roppongi.

① Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka (Tenjin Area)

This is a high-quality hotel directly connected to Solaria Plaza, right in the heart of Tenjin. The Nanakuma Line “Tenjin Minami” Station is right in front, and it’s just two stations to Roppongi Station. The location is perfect for those who want to enjoy a full day in Roppongi after dining and shopping in the Tenjin area.

  • Address: 2-2-43 Tenjin, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City
  • Access: Right next to the Nanakuma Line “Tenjin Minami” Station (directly connected to Solaria Plaza)

This popular hotel stands right in front of Canal City Hakata. With a large public bath and open-air bath, you can unwind your tired body after a day of walking. The location is convenient for enjoying food in the Hakata area, making it a great choice for those planning to explore Fukuoka over several days. You can get to Roppongi without any transfers from the Nanakuma Line “Hakata” Station.

Summary

Roppongi is a little-known area packed with “famous shops.” Many visitors might first come here for the Fukuoka City Science Museum, but honestly, the food scene is just as enjoyable. Depending on the time of day, you can try Seiki Hitoshina before or after lunch, Gyoza Osomatsu in the evening, or Soba Kiri Kanbee for a leisurely weekend lunch—mix it up based on your schedule.

The Roppongi area is about a 15-minute ride from Hakata Station on the Nanakuma Line. It’s a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of Tenjin and Hakata, nestled in a residential neighborhood. To travelers, it might look like a collection of “local hangouts.” That’s the charm of this area. After learning about the vastness of space at the science museum, having dinner at a small shop will likely stick in your memory.

If you’re coming from outside the prefecture or overseas, I recommend arranging a transportation pass for smooth subway travel or a “JR Kyushu Rail Pass” in advance. Also, booking a hotel in the Tenjin or Hakata area, which has good access to Roppongi, lets you enjoy the food and drinks there late into the night.
