Onsen and food. A day that seriously combines these two is surprisingly rare, even after traveling around the world. During my journey, I visited famous hot springs like Pamukkale in Turkey, Beitou in Taiwan, and Széchenyi in Hungary. Each place had wonderful water. But often, the “food eaten after the bath” feels disconnected from the local context, leaving my memories to end with just the onsen experience.
After wandering through 35 countries with a background in culinary school PR, I chose Fukuoka as my base. About an hour’s drive away is a small hot spring town called Harazuru Onsen. Nestled quietly in the mountains of Asakura City, near the Chikugo River, this spot is a hidden gem that doesn’t often appear in tourist guides.
In this article, I’ll introduce a one-day course for FIT travelers from abroad: “Unagi lunch → Three waterwheels tour → Kirin Brewery tour → Jungle bath → Ryokan kaiseki dinner.” It’s a compact route that fits within a 10km radius of Harazuru Onsen and the cities of Ukiha and Asakura. However, since the brewery tour includes tastings, the designated driver won’t be able to sample the beer. As mentioned later, please choose either “If you want to drink beer, use JR Kyudai Line + taxi” or “One family member takes on the role of driver.” Japan has some of the strictest penalties for drunk driving in the world—one drink, and you’re out.

11:00 Lunch: Unagi no Chitoseya (Ukiha City, Yoshii Town)
Just across the river from Harazuru Onsen, in Yoshii Town, Ukiha City, you’ll find Unagi no Chitoseya. This place is a must for anyone in Kyushu who loves eel—it’s famous enough that you can expect a line. The building has a retro Showa-era wooden charm, and even before you step through the noren curtain, the smell of charcoal and sweet sauce wafts down the alley. On weekdays, there’s often a line before opening. With over 1,400 Google reviews and a rating of 4.4, it’s a beloved spot for both locals and travelers.
The Allure of the Restaurant
The heart of Kyushu’s eel cooking lies in “belly-splitting, charcoal grilling, and steaming.” Unlike the Kanto style, which opens the eel from the back and includes a steaming step, Chitoseya splits it open from the belly and grills it slowly over charcoal. They serve the eel, coated in sauce, on a bed of warm rice in a steamer. The skin is crispy, the meat is fluffy, and the rice is infused with the sauce and fat—this is the unique style of Kyushu. Even when I compare it to the fish maw eel I had in Taiwan, the grilled catfish in Vietnam, or the Basque-style eel braised in red wine in France, the “trinity of eel, sauce, and rice” in Kyushu stands apart. The signature “Tokujou Seiro Mushi” is a flavor that makes the wait in line instantly understandable.
Restaurant Information
- Address: 128 Chitose, Yoshii Town, Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture
- Access: About 15 minutes by car from the Oita Expressway “Asakura IC” / About 7 minutes by car from JR Kyudai Main Line “Chikugo Yoshii Station”
- Hours: 11:00 AM – 7:30 PM (continuous service)
- Closed: Tuesdays
- Tip for Visiting: Arriving more than 30 minutes before the 11:00 opening is safe. During busy times, you might wait up to 2 hours, so check if they’re handing out numbered tickets when you arrive.
Shiro’s Tip
For the best experience, try the “three-step eating” method: first, take a bite without any sauce, then add a little sansho pepper, and finally, enjoy it as ochazuke (rice with tea). The flavor of the rice soaked in sauce changes over time. Since the wait can be long, take a stroll through the adjacent white-walled town (Yoshii Town Traditional Building Preservation District) before lining up to make the time pass faster.
1:00 PM Cultural Experience: Hishino’s Triple Waterwheel
About a 20-minute drive north from Shougetsu, you can see three large wooden wheels slowly turning in the middle of the countryside. Hishino’s Triple Waterwheel—operating since 1789, it’s been working in nearly the same spot for over 230 years. It’s a nationally designated historic site. This isn’t just for show; it still draws water from the Chikugo River to irrigate the rice fields, functioning as a “practical machine.”
Spot’s Appeal
The waterwheel has a diameter of about 4.5 meters. The way the three wheels work together to scoop up water is impressive, even from my perspective after seeing waterwheels around the world. I’ve visited the windmills of Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, bamboo waterwheels in Sapa, Vietnam, and flour waterwheels in Alsace, France, but it’s rare to find a place like Hishino that meets all these criteria: “an Edo-period mechanism intact,” “not for tourism but practical,” and “three wheels working in unison.” The operational period is from mid-June, when rice planting begins, to mid-October. It stops in winter, so summer to early autumn is the best time to visit. Nearby, there’s a farmers’ market called “Sankei Suisha no Sato Asakura,” where you can buy local specialties like pears, grapes, and Amaou strawberries.
Spot Information
- Address: Hishino, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture
- Access: About a 10-minute drive from the Oita Expressway “Asakura IC” / About a 20-minute drive from Shougetsu
- Hours: Open for viewing 24 hours since it’s an outdoor spot (operational from mid-June to mid-October during the day)
- Visiting Tips: There’s free parking available. You can check the waterwheel’s operational period next door at “Sankei Suisha no Sato Asakura.”
Shiro’s Tip
The sound of the waterwheel is surprisingly low when you hear it up close, resonating through your body like a rumble. The creaking of the wood, the water falling into the bamboo tubes, the drops dripping into the trough—it’s a natural orchestra made up of three layers. If you record it on your smartphone, it’ll bring back the memories of your trip long after you return home.
2:30 PM Experience: Kirin Beer Fukuoka Factory Tour
Just a 15-minute drive from the three-tiered waterwheel, I was greeted by the sweet, toasty aroma of malt wafting through the entrance of the sprawling grounds. The Kirin Beer Fukuoka Factory is one of the main plants brewing the Ichiban Shibori for the Kyushu region. If you join the guided tour (reservation required; cost: 500 yen for adults, about 70 minutes), you’ll get to see the entire beer-making process—from boiling the wort to fermentation tanks, filtration, and the canning line.
Highlights of the Experience
The highlight of the tour is the tasting of the freshly brewed Ichiban Shibori at the end (up to three cups per person). I’ve traveled to beer capitals around the world—Belgium’s Duvel, Germany’s Bamberg, and the Czech Republic’s Pilsen—but nothing compares to the experience of drinking beer right after it’s made, surrounded by the factory’s aromas. The sweetness of the malt, the bitterness of the hops, the way the carbonation hits your tongue—each sip is a world apart from what you find in stores. However, Japan has strict laws against drinking and driving, so the designated driver can’t have even one sip. At the factory, drivers receive a special badge at check-in, and instead, they’re offered Kirin’s “Zero ICHI” (non-alcoholic Ichiban Shibori) or soft drinks. It’s also family-friendly, making it a safe option for family trips.
Experience Information
- Address: 3601 Umada, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture
- Cost: 500 yen for adults (reservation required; about 70 minutes)
- Access: About 10 minutes by car from the Amagi IC on the Oita Expressway / About 15 minutes by car from the three-tiered waterwheel / About 20 minutes by taxi from JR Kyudai Main Line “Chikugo Yoshii Station”
- Hours: Factory tours are by reservation only (check the official site). Tours are typically held from Tuesday to Sunday.
- Closed: Mondays / New Year’s holidays
- Tip for Visiting: Tours are popular, so it’s recommended to book 2-3 weeks in advance. If you need an English guide, inquire when making your reservation.
Shiro’s Tip
If you really want to enjoy the beer tasting without driving, the best way is to skip the car and take the train from Hakata Station to Chikugo Yoshii Station on the JR Kyudai Main Line, then grab a taxi from there. The designated driver will be served “Zero ICHI” (non-alcoholic Ichiban Shibori), which surprisingly tastes quite close to the real thing, allowing them to soak in the factory atmosphere too. Balancing safety and enjoyment—that’s the right way to do a brewery tour in Japan.
4:30 PM Day Trip Onsen: Harazuru Onsen Taiseikaku Jungle Bath
After a 25-minute drive southeast along the Chikugo River from the Kirin Brewery, I finally arrive at Harazuru Onsen, a quaint hot spring village nestled between mountains and rivers. The “Jungle Bath” at Taiseikaku is a unique onsen experience—it’s completely enveloped by tropical plants. Ferns, palms, and houseplants sway in the steam, creating a scene that feels like stepping into a tropical grotto. Taiseikaku offers two large baths: the “Jungle Bath” and “Chitose no Yu,” which alternate between male and female use daily. Check the official website for which bath is designated for men and women on your visit day.
Attraction of the Onsen
The water at Harazuru Onsen is an alkaline simple spring and sulfur spring. It feels silky smooth on the skin, leaving you surprisingly soft after soaking. I’ve compared it to hot springs around the world, like Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, Beitou in Taiwan, and Rotorua in New Zealand, but Harazuru’s water has a quality that feels “gentle and non-exhausting,” even after a long soak. Day-use bathing is available from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and towel rentals are offered. This place is well-known among sauna enthusiasts and loved by both locals and travelers.
Facility Information
- Address: 20 Shiba, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture
- Access: About 5 minutes by car from the Oita Expressway “Haki IC” / About 25 minutes by car from Kirin Beer Fukuoka Brewery
- Hours: Day-use bathing 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
- Tip for Visiting: The Jungle Bath and Chitose no Yu alternate between genders. Towel and yukata rentals are available, so you can go hands-free. To avoid crowds, the best time is on weekdays around 4 PM.
Shiro’s Tip
The Jungle Bath has a high ceiling, and the natural light filtering through the plants creates geometric patterns with the steam. Sink into the bath up to your shoulders and take a moment to gaze up at the ceiling. The moment when “water, plants, and light” come together creates a scene unlike any other onsen I’ve seen around the world.
7:00 PM Dinner: Taiseikaku Dining Room
After soaking in the hot springs, I like to start with a cold beer or some local sake. The dining room at Taiseikaku focuses on kaiseki cuisine, rooted in the traditions of the Chikugo region and local ingredients. You can enjoy a day trip plan or just the kaiseki dinner, which is a nice perk for travelers who may not be staying overnight.
The Allure of the Cuisine
The kaiseki begins with eight small appetizer plates, followed by soup, sashimi, fried dishes, grilled items, simmered dishes, rice, and dessert. Notable highlights include the “Hakata Wagyu Sukiyaki” and “Grilled Sweetfish from the Chikugo River.” The wagyu has a clean richness that doesn’t weigh you down, even when paired with the sukiyaki sauce. The sweetfish is grilled slowly over charcoal, resulting in a crispy, fragrant skin, while the slight bitterness of the innards leaves a clean aftertaste. What I want to emphasize, after comparing various Japanese restaurants around the world, is the “localism that enhances the ingredients”—the vegetables from Asakura, the wagyu from Hakata, and the river fish from the Chikugo River resonate naturally on one plate.
Dining Information
- Address: 20 Shiba, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture (inside Taiseikaku)
- Access: About a 5-minute drive from the Oita Expressway “Haki IC”
- Hours: Dinner 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM (reservation required)
- Tip for Visiting: The day-use hot spring + dinner package is the easiest to book and reasonably priced. Check the official website for details.
Shiro’s Tip
The rice served at the end of the kaiseki is local Asakura rice. For the first bite, try it plain, without anything added. The sweetness of the rice, grown with water and soil, connects directly to the scenery of the three waterwheels you visited that day. The food is a memory of the land.
Practical Tips for Inbound FIT
The Harazuru Onsen area has somewhat limited access via public transport, so your main options are basically “rental car” or “JR + taxi.” It takes about an hour from Fukuoka City (Hakata Station, Tenjin) via the Oita Expressway. If you really want to enjoy the beer tasting at the Kirin Brewery, please do not choose the rental car. Japan has some of the strictest penalties for drunk driving in the world (instant license suspension, hefty fines, and worst-case scenario, jail time), and even one drink can get you in trouble. As an alternative, you can take the JR Kyudai Main Line to “Chikugo-Yoshii Station” and grab a taxi from there to connect to the Asakura and Ukiha areas in short distances. If you’re visiting with family or friends, have someone take on the role of the designated driver, and that person will be served “Zero ICHI” (non-alcoholic beer) at the brewery. The Kirin Brewery tour is by reservation only (500 yen for adults), and if you want an English guide, be sure to inquire when you make your reservation. For a day-use bath and dinner set plan at Taiseikaku, booking directly through the official site is the most reliable option.
Travel Preparation: eSIM & Transport Pass
As Asakura City is in a mountainous area, there are fewer Wi-Fi spots. It’s a good idea to purchase an eSIM in advance to supplement the rental car’s navigation system. If you’re planning to explore all of Kyushu starting from Fukuoka, the JR Kyushu Rail Pass will quickly pay for itself if you visit places like Yufuin and Nagasaki.
Summary
The scent of grilled eel, the rumble of waterwheels, the sweetness of malt at the brewery, the steam from jungle baths, the sweetness of rice in kaiseki—within a small basin called Asakura, five different sensory experiences are packed into just 10 kilometers. One reason I chose Fukuoka as my base after traveling through 35 countries is precisely this sense of “otherworldliness just an hour’s drive away.”
If you take a day to explore at a leisurely pace, you’ll notice how hot springs and cuisine, tradition and modernity, nature and industry coexist seamlessly in the same space. That’s the true luxury of the Asakura-Harazuru Onsen area. I encourage you to squeeze this day into your itinerary when you visit Fukuoka.
