Top 5 Recommended Hamburgers in Fukuoka | A Comprehensive Guide to Popular Shops in Tenjin, Daimyo, and Yakuin Areas

Fukuoka

Hello, I’m Shiro.

The burger scene in Fukuoka has rapidly gained depth over the past few years. There are popular shops that suddenly appear in back alleys, craft burgers with Google ratings over 4.8, and chefs from famous restaurants who have branched out to create their own dishes… each has a clear reason for being “only available in Fukuoka.” This time, I’ve summarized five places I actually visited, inspired by videos that became popular on YouTube, from a food lover’s perspective.

This article is not just a simple list of restaurants. For each establishment, I have organized it based on the charm of the shop and shop information. Please understand the budget, access, and ordering tips in advance to choose a dish that won’t disappoint.

1st Place: Hungry Heaven Fukuoka Imaizumi (Chuo Ward, Imaizumi)

There are not many burger shops in Fukuoka that fit the term “back alley” as well as this one. The dish makes you feel that the evaluation of “the best in Fukuoka” is not an exaggeration, with the presence of meat and the balance of composition standing out even when compared to other famous shops.

The Charm of the Shop

Produced by a yakiniku restaurant, the “meatiness” of the patty is exceptional. This place combines the hidden gem feel unique to a back alley location with a commitment to quality. The impressive appearance and the completeness when eaten do not differ, creating a sense of “I want to come back again” with high reproducibility.

Shop Information

  • Address: 1-17-14-1 1F Imaizumi, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: About a 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station South Exit on the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line
  • Business Hours: 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM
  • Closed: Open year-round (no holidays)
  • Visiting Tips: There is likely to be a line during lunch hours. A late lunch after 2 PM or an early evening visit is relatively smoother for entry.

Shiro’s Tip

Since the patty has a strong flavor, I recommend starting with a simple cheeseburger to directly experience the taste of the meat. The black “caramel buns” are also distinctive, making for great photo opportunities.

2nd Place: Imaiya’s Hamburger Roppongi (Chuo Ward, Roppongi)

Imaiya’s Hamburger in the Roppongi area is a classic shop that is always mentioned when talking about burgers in Fukuoka. Despite its exterior retaining a Showa-era atmosphere, the balance of buns, patty, and toppings is well calculated, making it a place where you can say, “I never get tired of it no matter how many years I visit.”

The Charm of the Shop

The reason it has been supported for many years lies in its unique shape of “hot dog-style hamburger,” inherited from the main store in Nishikikoen. Without chasing flashy new menus, it carefully maintains the axis of patty doneness and bun crispiness. Being rooted in an area with many locals, it allows tourists to easily experience “the authentic taste loved by the locals,” and it is also suitable for takeout, making it a good match for routes heading towards Ohori Park.

Shop Information

  • Address: 4-9-40 Roppongi, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: About a 3-minute walk from Roppongi Station on the Subway Nanakuma Line
  • Business Hours: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM / 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • Closed: Tuesdays (open on holidays)
  • Visiting Tips: Popular menu items may sell out by early afternoon. Aim for weekdays around lunch or early evening for the best chances.

Shiro’s Tip

For first-timers at Imaiya’s Hamburger, I recommend starting with the classic “Mixed Egg” or “Frank Egg.” If you are taking it to go, eat it within 10 minutes after it’s wrapped to enjoy the bun’s crispiness at its best.

3rd Place: U.S. burger (Chuo Ward, Daimyo)

This burger specialty shop is said to be “the one I wanted to visit the most” in the Tenjin area. Located in the stylish Daimyo area, expectations rise from the exterior alone. When you actually eat it, you feel that the reputation is not just hearsay, as each bite reinforces that feeling.

The Charm of the Shop

The uniqueness of this shop lies in the authentic recipes brought in by the American owner. There is no compromise on the quality of the patty’s meat texture, doneness, bun toasting, and sauce proportions. Given its location in Daimyo, it attracts a wide range of customers from lunch to dinner, and the counter seating is convenient for solo diners.

Shop Information

  • Address: 2-3-2 T’s SQUARE 5F, Daimyo, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: About a 3-minute walk from Akasaka Station on the Subway Airport Line
  • Business Hours: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM / 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • Closed: Irregular holidays
  • Visiting Tips: There is a break between lunch and dinner, so be mindful of the timing. Since it has irregular holidays, check the official social media for business confirmation before visiting.

Shiro’s Tip

Since the American owner creates authentic flavors, I recommend starting with a simple cheeseburger or a double patty without unnecessary alterations. Choosing a menu item that highlights the balance of meat and cheese allows you to experience American burger culture in one bite.

4th Place: GOONIES BURGER CLUB (Chuo Ward, Kego)

Located in the Kego area, GOONIES BURGER CLUB combines the atmosphere of an American diner with authentic craft burgers. It is within walking distance from Tenjin, making it convenient for evening visits, and allows for a stay-style enjoyment by combining burgers with drinks.

The Charm of the Shop

As the name “club” suggests, the space is designed around the burger experience. The patty has a strong meat flavor, and the structure is designed to maintain balance with the bun, resulting in a high density in each bite. Its location within walking distance from the Tenjin area makes it easy to use as a first stop for drinking parties or a late-night closure, creating an atmosphere that is welcoming even for solo diners. The craft burgers are highly complete, and the price range is reasonable for this quality.

Shop Information

  • Address: 1-6-3 Kego, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: About a 10-minute walk from Tenjin Station on the Subway Airport Line / About a 7-minute walk from Yakuin-Odori Station on the Subway Nanakuma Line
  • Business Hours: 11:30 AM – 1:00 AM (25:00)
  • Closed: Thursdays
  • Visiting Tips: Open until 1 AM, so it can be used as a closure after eating at other places. It gets crowded on weekend nights, so it’s recommended to aim for an early visit or a later time.

Shiro’s Tip

With a large menu selection, it’s best to start with the signature “Goonies Burger” for first-timers. If you are not used to customizing toppings, ask the staff for “the most popular” and order it as is for a guaranteed enjoyable experience. Instead of just stopping by for a quick bite, it’s better to take your time and enjoy the burger.

5th Place: THE BASKET (Chuo Ward, Yakuin)

The expression “the owner of that famous shop” is chosen because the previous career of the owner serves as a motivation for visiting. The story of a person who served as the manager of the renowned shop “Hungry Heaven” for many years and then branched out to establish this place raises the expectation for the taste, and when you actually eat it, the value of the background is condensed into each dish.

The Charm of the Shop

The burgers made by the chef who has independent experience at a famous shop clearly differ from amateur establishments in their commitment to the quality of the base ingredients and the clarity of the image of the finished product. The structure makes it clear “why this combination,” inheriting the DNA of Hungry Heaven while creating a uniquely evolved sense of balance. Each dish reveals the chef’s background as you eat.

Shop Information

  • Address: 1-12-15 Yakuin, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: About a 3-minute walk from Yakuin-Odori Station on the Subway Nanakuma Line / About a 5-minute walk from Yakuin Station on the Nishitetsu Line
  • Business Hours: 11:30 AM – 9:30 PM (L.O. 9:00 PM) *Sundays and holidays until 8:30 PM (L.O. 8:00 PM)
  • Closed: Irregular holidays
  • Visiting Tips: Since it is located on a street where popular shops in the Yakuin area gather, it’s safer to arrive early during lunch hours.

Shiro’s Tip

The way the patty and cheese blend together is artistic. While the basic cheeseburger is of course excellent, the balance of topping burgers like avocado and pineapple stands out. If you’re unsure where to have lunch in the Yakuin area, choosing here is a safe bet.

Comparison of the 5 Shops

Shop Name Area Style Closed Solo Use
Hungry Heaven Imaizumi Chuo Ward, Imaizumi Yakiniku Produced / Back Alley Open Year-Round
Imaiya’s Hamburger Roppongi Chuo Ward, Roppongi Local Classic / Takeout Available Tuesdays
U.S. burger Chuo Ward, Daimyo American Style / Tenjin Area Irregular Holidays
GOONIES BURGER CLUB Chuo Ward, Kego American / Night Friendly Thursdays
THE BASKET Chuo Ward, Yakuin Independent from Hungry Heaven Irregular Holidays

Conclusion

Burgers in Fukuoka are not “all the same.” From meat-rich burgers produced by yakiniku, the locally loved koppe-pan style, authentic styles made by American owners, American diner-style craft shops open at night, to independent shops from famous establishments, each has a clear reason for visiting.

If you’re unsure about the first place to visit, for easy access, choose either “Hungry Heaven Imaizumi” or “GOONIES BURGER CLUB.” In the Tenjin and Daimyo area, “U.S. burger” can be efficiently combined on the same route. In the Yakuin area, “THE BASKET” is a sure choice. Hungry Heaven and THE BASKET have a “master-disciple” relationship, and comparing both will give you a better sense of the depth of the Fukuoka burger scene.
