Onigiri Yokocho | Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City (Kego) ── All-you-can-eat mentaiko rice balls breakfast specialty shop

A shop that symbolizes Fukuoka’s breakfast culture is “Onigiri Yokocho.” As a mentaiko rice ball specialty shop, its style of welcoming the morning in Hakata with freshly made rice balls is gaining attention.

The signature menu is a set where you can compare famous Fukuoka brands of mentaiko, such as Fukuya and Asadaya (¥900). Additionally, the generous menu of “All-you-can-eat rice balls (20 minutes) ¥2,000” is also popular, allowing you to enjoy as many mentaiko rice balls as you like. The live experience of having them made right in front of you over the counter is one of the attractions of this shop.

At the time of filming the video, it was operating inside the Triangle Market on Watanabe-dori, but it has now relocated to Kego 1-chome. Please check the latest information on social media or by phone before your visit.

Address: 1-12-8 Kego, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture / Business Hours: 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM (until rice runs out) / Closed: Saturday and Sunday / Phone: 080-2759-1426

Shiro’s Tip

Open only on weekdays, it gets busy right at 7:30 AM when it opens. If you’re visiting during a trip to Fukuoka, the first morning of your sightseeing trip is recommended. The relocated shop operates in a shared space, so it’s a good idea to check the day’s business status on social media (Instagram, etc.) before your visit.

Seafood and Rice Balls | Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City (Hirao) ── A seafood rice ball specialty shop with long lines every day

“Seafood and Rice Balls” became famous after being featured in KBC’s popular program “Fukuoka Queue White Paper.” Since its opening in March 2023, it has been the most popular rice ball specialty shop in Fukuoka with long lines every day.

Koji Nakajima from the “Absolutely No Miss Fukuoka Restaurant” channel also introduced it as “the rice ball shop with the longest lines in Fukuoka,” gathering overwhelming support with over 30,000 views.

Popular menu items include Namero Rice Ball, Mentaiko Mayo Ikura Egg Yolk, Hokkaido Fresh Ikura Rice Ball, all luxurious dishes made with plenty of seafood. The signature “Full Stomach Set” is ¥1,200, and the rice ball set starts at ¥900, making it reasonably priced and worth lining up before opening during lunch hours. At night, it switches to a standing bar format as “Seafood and Tavern,” allowing you to enjoy it in two ways at one place.

Address: 1-7-21 Omiya, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture / Business Hours: 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM / Closed: Irregular holidays / Nearest: About a 7-minute walk from Nishitetsu Hirao Station

Shiro’s Tip

On some days, numbered tickets are distributed 30 minutes before opening (around 10:30 AM). On days when they sell out quickly, they may run out within an hour of opening, so it’s essential to check Instagram for the day’s business and sold-out information before visiting. The standing bar service at night (Seafood and Tavern) usually does not require reservations and is also recommended.

Sekani no Onigiri | Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City (Kendama) ── A specialty store of carefully selected rice loved by locals

Sekani no Onigiri, located in Kendama, Hakata-ku, is a specialty store loved by local regulars. It was introduced on the channel “Zettai Hazusanai Fukuoka Hanten” as a “store that pours passion into onigiri.”

The popular menu items include salmon, mackerel, and egg yolk marinated in soy sauce (each ¥200~), featuring simple ingredients. While not flashy, the commitment to how the rice is cooked and the careful preparation of the ingredients continues to create repeat customers. As a takeout-only establishment with a parking lot, it is also convenient for customers arriving by car.

Address: 2-13-14 Kendama, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture / Business Hours: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM / Regular Holidays: Irregular / Instagram: @seka2onigiri / Nearest: Gion Station, about 8 minutes on foot

Shiro’s Tip

Since the listing status on Tabelog may fluctuate, it is recommended to check the business status for the day on Instagram (@seka2onigiri) before visiting. “Simple yet delicious” is a common phrase in reviews. This is a place you should definitely visit if you want to face the essence of rice and onigiri, different from flashy seafood approaches.

Summary: If you’re eating rice balls in Fukuoka, visit these 3 shops

Fukuoka’s rice ball specialty shops each have their own unique personality and philosophy. If you want to enjoy the dedication typical of the home of mentaiko, I recommend “おむすび横丁”; if you want to enjoy the luxury of seafood, “海鮮とおむすび”; and if you want to taste the deliciousness of rice straight, “せかにのおにぎり” is the best choice.

All shops have relatively short business hours, and there are days when they sell out. Before visiting, be sure to check each shop’s social media for the latest information, and definitely add “rice ball specialty shops” to your Fukuoka gourmet list.
